Potted History

About the Village

Bishopsteignton is a parish of some 6 square miles. It is noted for breathtaking views across the estuary of the River Teign, out over the English Channel and inland towards Dartmoor.

The Village enjoys all the advantages of a semi-rural lifestyle, spread across the sheltered slopes of the Haldon Hills which border the northern shore of the Teign.

Bishopsteignton is steeped in history, more than a thousand years ago King Athelstan endowed the village with a group of Benedictine Monks who established themselves at Radway on a site called Old Walls. The remains of the building are still visible today.

In 1050, Edward the Confessor split the royal manor of TAINTONA in two giving half to the Bishop of Exeter and keeping half himself – hence we have Kingsteignton and Bishopsteignton.

The name was pronounced BISHOPS-TAIN-TON “Teign” or “Tain” meant river and “Ton” or “Tun” an enclosure belonging to the Bishop.  It was always written as two words until it was realised it cost a penny more on a telegram for two words and was changed to “Bishopsteignton”.
